Behind the scenes: May 2010

Another border-line event. Having been rescued in-extremis by the highest power in the country, the PM himself, Schiniathlon prepares its second race of the year by trying to sort things out.

Endless meetings at the GGA (General Secretariat of Sports) lead nowhere: there is a blackhole and we are right in the middle of it. Therefore subject to whatever bad intentions there are around us.

In a nusthell. The Law in Greece plans for the National Federation to organise the sport, via a network of clubs. Problem number 1: we cannot be a club because the Federation does not accept us. Problem number 2: even if we were accepted as a club, the Federation would have a right not to let us organise races... since it has self-appointed itself the sole body empowered to organise races in Greece...

Therefore, our unipersonal Ltd company does not have much to navigate with: there are no laws in Greece regulating the status of private race organisers. Where other countries in Europe have a "code of sports" Greece has absoluetly nothing. And... there are no other private race organisers in the country, we are pioneer in the domain.

We end up the first round of talks more confused than we were at the beginning. To top it all, the government reshufflings mean that sports no longer fall under a Ministry (as was the case with the Health Ministry) and we seem to be thrown into a black hole from all possible directions.

Approaching the 2nd event of the year, there is uncertainty across the board. We are lucky to still benefit from having had the support of the PM at the January race, at least every local authority remembers that. And it seems enough, this time around, to make them bin the faxes they receive from the National Federation... this time around...
