Behind the scenes: July 2009

As Schiniathlon continued its strong and steady growth, now clearly above the 200 athletes-mark per race, we wondered how to offer something that would be different... We had been developing a wide range of distances (sprint, medium, long), we had been using different sets of routes (the coastal road, the rowing centre in & out road)... We wanted something quite different. We also wanted to have one event which would be more of a celebration / party atmosphere...

That's how we came up with this idea of a "vintage triathlon", which we would combine with the July full-moon... and start as the moon came up!

So the concept was: full-moon aquathlon, starting as the sun went down, with the full moon rising above the sea, all the athletes equiped with phosphorescent gear, for a 750m loop in the sea. Then back to shore on the beach, pick up your shoes or go barfoot and run the 6km to the end of the bay and back. After that we would have a free barbecue for everyone at the resort, with "Lester & The Cool" playing live and free beer provided by the sponsor. ... Doesn't that sound perfect?!

About 80 athletes took part in this first Vintage Edition and what great fun we had. This event in particular epitomizes the true spirit of Schiniathlon, celebrating our passion for the sport and sharing with the community, meeting and bonding, making new friends and creating memories...
