Triathlon Projects 2011

Ironman triathlons have been around since the late 70’s and since then, the craze and passion about long-distance events have grown immensely across Europe and North America. There are now over 25 Ironman and 35 ˝ Ironman events around the world, plus the Challenge events (same distances as “iron” events), each welcoming thousands of athletes, giving dozens of thousands every year the opportunity to “go long”.

  • Half iron distance = 1900m swim – 90km bike – 21,1km run
  • Full iron distance = 3800m swim – 180km bike – 42,2km run

In 2011 we will host once again the ˝ Iron distance ASTROMAN (15.05.2011) and we hope to see much more athletes register.

We also expect, quite logically, that groups will form to race IM distance events abroad. It seems that quite a few athletes will group and race the oldest European IM distance... Challenge ROTH (28.07.2011): nearly 20 athletes are already signed up for this.

Other groups are forming for more ˝ and full IM (read the www.triathlon.gr and schiniathlon forums).

We hope to see more and more athletes fulfill their dreams to achieve their sportive goals. And we hope that… the more athletes will go abroad and compete at these sorts of events, the more the word will spread inside Greece… the demand will grow bigger… more events will be organized across the country… Until then don’t forget to check out the forum and keep up a happy and healthy training!

History on Greeks participation at IM and ˝ IM events: As far as Greek athletes participations in such distance events are concerned… before 2008, less than 30 Greeks in total had ever taken part in an “iron distance” event (full or half).

In 2008, 2009, 2010 Schiniathlon has been a catalyst for large groups of athletes to dare and do their first steps into the “long-distance” arena.

2008 saw a group of 14 athletes going to their 1st shot at the Half-ironman Austria (St Polten), all of us attempting the distance for the first time ever.

2009 saw a group of 22 athletes registering all together to Ironman Frankfurt, with 5 already familiar with the distance.

In 2010 40 athletes in various groups which have formed more or less informally, went to full and half Ironman challenges across europe and 110 athletes took on the challenge of the first ˝ iron distance in Greece (Astroman).
